In Woodsfield & Monroe Country
Welcome to Woodsfield, the seat of Monroe County, flourished during the turn of the century oil and gas boom. We are served
by State Highways 26,SR 800 and 78, about 45 miles southwest of Wheeling, WV, within a
few hours' drive of Columbus, Akron, Cleveland, Dayton, Cincinnati, Louisville
and Pittsburgh.

Monroe County was named the "Switzerland of Ohio" for the beautiful rugged hills that reminded early German and Swiss settlers of their European homeland. It was established in 1813, and named for James Monroe, the 5th president of the United States.
Coal was found in Monroe County and is an important economic resource, but is
found too far underground to economically surface mine.
Primary metal is the second major industry in Monroe County. Woodsfield was
named after Archibald Woods who helped plat the town in 1812.

Held the 4th week in August, the county fair
features 5 days of exhibits, midway rides and games, tractor and truck pulls, harness racing and more. Also featured during the fair is a 17-mile
bike race. The Black Walnut Festival offers contests and demonstrations of old and new logging industry techniques that
include a working steam-powered sawmill plus crafts, antique auction, quilt show and more. Attractions in a
different section of the county are featured each year in the drive-it-yourself,
Swiss Hills Autumn Tour that is sponsored annually by the Monroe County Park
District.
Primary, middle and high schools include Woodsfield Elementary School, St.
Sylvester's Central Elementary, Monroe Central High School and Swiss Hills
Career Center.
Nearby colleges and universities include West Virginia University, West Liberty
State College, Fairmont State College, Ohio University, Kent State
University-Stark Campus and others.
Area medical centers and hospitals include the Monroe County Care Center, the
Monroe County Clinic, Barnesville Hospital Association, Sisterville General
Hospital and Wetzel County Hospital.
A high percentage of rural county land plus Wayne National Forest lands, make
Monroe County an outdoors paradise. Deer, wild turkey and small game hunting are
also quite popular. Great fishing sites can be found along Sunfish Creek, the
Little Muskingum River, the Ohio River and Monroe Lake. The Monroe County Park
District is made up of 9 parks with over 700 acres spread throughout the county.
Recreational activities include picnicking, hiking, boating, fishing, swimming
and camping.
The Wayne National Forest covers 178,000+ acres in the foothills of the
Appalachian Mountains and provides camping, hiking and horseback riding on
developed trails plus hunting, fishing and endless recreational possibilities.
Kiedaish Point Park features an overlook of the Ohio River. The point was
developed in 1974 as a picnic/overlook area with a commanding view of New
Martinsville, WV. Hiking trails afford our visitors a unique
glimpse of the rugged terrain that exists in the River Valley.
